The body of a tourist, who went missing while bathing at Cox’s Bazar beach, was recovered early Monday.
The deceased was identified as Mohammad Abir, 18, son of Eliyas Munshi from Shahidnagar area of Lalbagh in Dhaka. He was an employee at a business establishment in the capital’s New Market area.
Md Osman, an official of Sea Safe Life Guard, said the body washed ashore at Kutub Bazar point in Samity Para around 6am on Monday and was later sent to Cox’s Bazar District Sadar Hospital morgue at 9am.
Abir went missing at Sea Gull point of the beach around 12:30pm on Sunday after being swept away by a strong current.
His friend Mohammad Imon said nine friends came from Dhaka and stayed at Sea Land Guest House. While bathing at Sea Gull point, Abir was swept away by a strong current, despite a friend’s attempt to rescue him.
Following the incident, lifeguards and Tourist Police launched a coordinated search operation.
Md Mahmudur Rahman Sayem, Executive Magistrate in charge of the district administration’s tourism cell, said necessary measures were taken immediately after the incident.
Officials said the body will be handed over to the family after completing legal formalities.
