The body of Mubarak Hossain, 40, a joint convener of the BNP’s farmer wing Krishak Dal in Kaunia’s Tepamadhupur union was recovered from a pit in Rangpur a day after he went missing.
Police said the body was discovered late Friday near Shahin Bazar in Uttar Bishwanath, behind the house of a man named Mominul Islam.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kaunia Police Station, Abdul Latif Shah said Mubarak’s wife filed a general diary Friday morning after he went missing.
Locals later spotted signs of a buried body in a banana grove and informed police, who retrieved the body and sent it to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination.
Mubarak, a farmer by profession, had left home Thursday night after playing at a local market field but never returned.
Police have arrested one suspect named Nazrul Islam and said a case is under preparation. Efforts are underway to arrest the prime suspect Mominul.
Tepamadhupur Krishak Dal convener Iman Ali said Mubarak’s mobile phone was found in a paddy field near Mominul’s house on Friday afternoon.
Locals then searched his compound and discovered a freshly dug pit in the banana grove where the body was recovered. Mominul fled the scene but his younger brother was detained.
Krishak Dal leaders have demanded a fair investigation and exemplary punishment for those involved in the killing.
