The bodies of three members of the same Bangladeshi family who were murdered in Rome, Italy, have arrived in Bangladesh.
All of them were residents of Companiganj in Noakhali. Their bodies reached Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka at around 8am on Friday.
According to family sources, the janaza of the victims will be held after Maghrib prayers on Friday at the Shishu Niketan Government Primary School grounds in Ward 5 of Charkankra Union under Companiganj upazila. They will later be buried at their family graveyard.
The deceased are Kamal Uddin Babul, 39, a resident of Ward 5 of Charkankra Union; his wife, 38; and their five-year-old daughter Arwa Islam Arisha. The couple’s only son, Amir Hossain Ayon Chowdhury, was critically injured in the incident. He returned to Bangladesh from Rome with the bodies of his family members. He is expected to reach his village home with relatives on Friday afternoon to attend the janaza and burial.
Babul’s father Sirajul Islam said, “My son came to the country on holiday and put soil on the graveyard. He will now be buried there along with his wife and child. My heart is breaking. I want justice.”
On the night of 26 June, Kamal Uddin Babul, his wife and daughter were stabbed to death at an apartment on Via Montilio in the Casalotti area near Rome. After receiving information from neighbours, police recovered the three bodies from the scene. Their son Ayon was rescued in a critically injured condition and admitted to Gemelli Polyclinic Hospital.
The first janaza of the three victims was held at Piazza Ormea in Rome’s Casalotti area at 6:30pm local time on 11 August. Their bodies were sent to Bangladesh afterwards.
Yunus, a cousin of the deceased Babul, said they learned about the killings through relatives living in Italy. He said Babul used to mix warmly with everyone when he visited Bangladesh and regularly took part in social activities.
“We are speechless over such a brutal incident,” he said, expressing surprise that the accused person, Shahadat, has not yet been brought under the law.
Meanwhile, Italian police are continuing their investigation to determine the motive behind the killings. Family sources said police are collecting evidence from the scene and questioning relevant individuals.
It may be mentioned that on 2 July 2025, an anonymous letter allegedly issued in the name of a suspected robbery gang called ‘Lal Bahini’ was found in front of their home in Charkankra Union. Relatives alleged that the letter demanded money and gold jewellery and threatened to kill the son and grandson of the family and torture female members if the demands were not met.
Following security concerns, Babul’s father Sirajul Islam reportedly filed written complaints with Companiganj Police Station and the local army camp.
