BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has praised the announcement of national election schedule, saying it marks the beginning of “a new horizon” in Bangladesh’s political landscape.
He described the day as “immensely joyful” and expressed overall satisfaction with the Election Commission’s timetable.
Speaking to reporters in front of the BNP Chairperson’s Gulshan office on Thursday, Fakhrul said minor phrasing issues in the schedule were “not significant.”
“There will be some problems, no doubt,” he said. “But if we work together, we can overcome them.”
Fakhrul noted that the announcement of national election and referendum scheduled for 12 February was a “historic milestone” for the country. He said the election offers an opportunity to re-establish democratic practices following years of what he described as “so-called elections” and democratic backsliding.
The BNP leader, who spent years in prison during the party’s pro-democracy movement, reiterated that he never doubted the election would take place. “There was no uncertainty in my mind. The date has been declared, and the Almighty willing, the election will be held.”
Emphasising that the responsibility for conducting a free and fair election lies with the Election Commission, Fakhrul said the BNP expects a neutral, transparent, and inclusive electoral process.
“All political parties and candidates should work to make this election festive and participatory,” he added.
The BNP leader said the mass uprising led by students has created a new opportunity for forming a truly representative parliament. “Through this election, we hope to restore democracy and build a people’s parliament,” he said.
Regarding political reforms, Fakhrul noted that months of discussions among political parties resulted in consensus on many issues, while unresolved matters will be decided through a referendum.
On seat-sharing with alliance partners, Fakhrul said the BNP has not finalised its list of candidates. “We had initial discussions, and the list is almost ready. Those who took part in the joint movement against the previous government will be duly evaluated.
“I do not expect major problems. We are optimistic about contesting the election together with our allies.”
