BNP has called upon the interim government to ensure timely national elections through the lawful implementation of the July National Charter.

The demand came from a proposal adopted at the party’s Standing Committee meeting on Thursday night, chaired by Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman. The announcement was made by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

In a press release signed by the secretary general, BNP said it firmly believes all political parties that participated in the extensive discussions leading to the national consensus will remain united in implementing it.

The party emphasised that no new questions or crises should be raised to obstruct the election aimed at restoring democracy.

BNP urged the interim government to take sincere and effective steps to implement all agreed provisions of the July Charter in line with the law and the Constitution, and to hold the election within the stipulated time.

According to the Standing Committee’s adopted proposal, the national consensus was reached through long and detailed discussions at the National Consensus Commission, with some notes of dissent on specific issues, before being formally signed on 17 October at the South Plaza of the National Parliament.

As a signatory to the Charter, BNP reaffirmed its commitment to uphold and implement all matters contained in it in accordance with the Constitution and existing laws.

The proposal also stated that the party would honour the sacrifices of those martyred and injured during the 16-year struggle for democracy and the July–August 2024 mass uprising, while remaining steadfast against any attempt to create new disputes or crises over the unanimously adopted July National Charter.
