BNP Standing Committee member Abdul Moyeen Khan on Tuesday said his party believes in multiparty democracy and does not engage in politics of revenge.

He made the remarks after placing wreaths at the graves of party founder and former president Ziaur Rahman and former prime minister Khaleda Zia at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar around 12:30pm.

Speaking to reporters, Moyeen Khan said the BNP’s stance is clear in response to questions about the reopening of offices by the Awami League in various parts of the country.

“The BNP has always worked in favour of independence. During the dark night of 1971, when Pakistani occupation forces attacked innocent people, Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman stood in protest,” he said.

He added that the BNP remains committed to the ideals of multiparty and parliamentary democracy. “We will move forward upholding those principles. We do not believe in one-party rule. We believe in the power of the people,” he said.

Describing the BNP as a liberal democratic party, Moyeen Khan said it practices inclusive politics and revenge politics. He noted that party Chairman Tarique Rahman has repeatedly emphasised adherence to the rule of law.

The BNP leader also said democracy had been restored following the mass uprising of 5 August, 2024, and pledged that the party would safeguard both democracy and the country’s independence.

Referring to the party’s recent electoral success, he said a democratic government had been formed with a two-thirds majority in parliament after what he described as 17 years of authoritarian rule.

Highlighting Narsingdi’s historical role in anti-colonial movements during British rule, Moyeen Khan said the district has a legacy of resistance and democratic activism.

He noted that voters in the district elected five BNP candidates to parliament and pledged continued service to the people.

Lawmakers from Narsingdi – Abdul Khan (Narsingdi-2), Khairul Kabir Khokon (Narsingdi-1), Manjur Elahi (Narsingdi-3), Sardar Md Sakhawat Hossain (Narsingdi-4) and Ashraf Uddin (Narsingdi-5)- accompanied him during the visit and paid tribute to the late leaders.
