The Ministry of Liberation War Affairs has announced that the planned one‑minute symbolic blackout on Genocide Day, 25 March, will not take place.
Abul Khair, public relations officer of the ministry, confirmed to Times of Bangladesh that the blackout programme has been suspended.
Earlier, a government press release stated that, in remembrance of the dark night of 225 March 1971, a symbolic blackout would be observed nationwide from 10:30pm to 10:31pm.
Key Point Installations (KPIs), emergency facilities, and foreign missions in Bangladesh were to remain exempt.
However, a message issued by the ministry late Tuesday night clarified that the one‑minute blackout will not be observed. No detailed explanation was provided for the suspension.
The symbolic blackout programme was first introduced during the previous Awami League government to commemorate the atrocities of 25 March in 1971, when the Pakistani military launched “Operation Searchlight” in Dhaka, carrying out a brutal massacre.
