Bangladesh’s garment exporters will recognise 12 initiatives for advances in worker welfare, environmental sustainability and industrial innovation at Batexpo 2026, as manufacturers face growing pressure to make production cleaner and more responsible to remain competitive in global markets.
The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) will present the Sustainability Leadership (TSL) Awards across four categories during the 25th anniversary edition of Batexpo, scheduled for 18–19 November at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in Dhaka.
The awards will recognise achievements in labour welfare, women’s leadership, water conservation, textile recycling, business innovation and responsible growth among small and medium-sized factories.
Winners will receive platinum, gold and silver honours under four main categories: People First, Planet Positive, Next Frontier and Rising Strength.
The People First category covers worker welfare, model factories, women in leadership and community contributions.
Planet Positive will recognise sustainability leadership, water conservation and pioneering initiatives in circular textiles.
Next Frontier focuses on business innovation, future-ready manufacturing and worker-centred technological advances.
Rising Strength is designed for small and medium-sized enterprises, recognising smaller factories making significant contributions through resource-efficient innovation and responsible growth.
The awards come as climate action, carbon reduction, recycling, circular production and energy-efficient factories become increasingly important to the global apparel industry’s sourcing decisions.
BGMEA said the initiative would highlight factories that have improved workplace safety, compliance, environmental performance and resilience, building on progress made by Bangladesh’s garment industry over the past decade.
BGMEA President Mahmud Hasan Khan said the country’s garment factories had made significant advances in green manufacturing and innovation to meet changing international requirements.
“The Sustainability Leadership Award will showcase the contributions of these forward-looking entrepreneurs and factories nationally and internationally, making the sector more competitive,” he said.
The awards are being organised by BGMEA through the STILE II project of German development agency GIZ, with support from Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and Bangladesh’s Ministry of Commerce.
GIZ Bangladesh STILE II Project Manager Michael Klode said the initiative built on earlier collaborations with BGMEA, including the Social and Environmental Excellence Awards in 2012 and 2014 and the TSL Awards in 2022.
He said the latest edition would recognise factories demonstrating leadership in environmental sustainability, social responsibility and environmental, social and governance practices.
Klode expressed hope that the awards would encourage wider adoption of sustainable practices and strengthen the industry’s resilience and global competitiveness.
Bangladesh Brand Forum Founder and Managing Director Shariful Islam said sustainability had become essential to the industry’s survival rather than an optional business strategy.
He said recognising factories that prioritise workers and the environment would help strengthen the credibility of the “Made in Bangladesh” label in international markets.
The Minister for Environment and Climate Change has agreed to attend the ceremony as chief guest and present the awards, according to BGMEA.
Batexpo 2026, described by the organisers as Bangladesh’s largest international garment industry exhibition, will have PDS Limited as its title sponsor.
BGMEA has invited garment and textile factories interested in competing for the awards to submit applications or nominations through the Batexpo TSL Awards website.
