Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has detained a man with two gold bars at the Sonamasjid Land Port checkpoint in Chapainawabganj.
Commanding Officer of 59 Battalion in Chapainawabganj Lt Col Golam Kibria confirmed the matter through a press release on Friday.
The detainee has been identified as Md Sani Mai, 27, hailing from Gafargaon upazila of Mymensingh district.
BGB officials said Sani was attempting to cross into India through the Sonamasjid Land Port immigration at around 5pm on Thursday. He was found in possession of two gold bars weighing a total of 231.81 grams. BGB members on duty at the Sonamasjid Integrated Checkpost (ICP) recovered the bars during routine checking procedures.
They added that he was initially flagged by an archway metal detector, and during primary interrogation, he admitted to carrying gold. He was then taken to the Shibganj Upazila Health Complex, where an X-ray report revealed two bars of gold concealed within his rectum. The market value of the seized gold is estimated to be around Tk54 lakh.
A case has been filed at Shibganj Police Station regarding the incident.
