Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Director General Major General Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqui inaugurated the “BGB Fisheries Fortnight-2026” on Monday morning by releasing fish fry of various species into the pond adjacent to Shaheed Captain Ashraf Hall at BGB Headquarters in Pilkhana, marking the launch of the force’s contribution to the National Fisheries Fortnight-2026 programme.
Under the theme “A self-reliant nation through silver fish, Bangladesh first,” Siddiqui called for fish farming and production to be expanded at all levels to sustain the country’s progress towards self-sufficiency in fish production, urging individuals and institutions to undertake farming initiatives wherever opportunities exist, a spokesperson said in a press release.
The BGB chief said Bangladesh ranks second in the world in freshwater fish production and, with continued effort, has the potential to become the global leader in the sector. He added that further gains were possible in marine fisheries through proper utilisation of the Bay of Bengal’s vast resources.
Siddiqui noted that large water bodies are not always necessary for fish farming, as various species can be cultivated in small ponds and other suitable water bodies. He said increased production would help ensure nutrition and food security while also creating employment opportunities and boosting economic development, and urged everyone to contribute towards the government’s fish production drive from their respective positions.
He also stressed expanding fish farming activities by properly utilising existing ponds and water bodies at BGB installations and units. The release of fish fry on Monday marked the formal start of the two-week programme, under which fish fry will be released at BGB installations nationwide alongside efforts to encourage fish farming and raise awareness on conservation and production.
