Mohammad Belal Hossain Chowdhury, member (VAT Implementation and IT) of the National Board of Revenue (NBR), has been removed from his position following allegations of amassing wealth beyond known sources of income.
A notification to this effect was issued on Wednesday by the Internal Resources Division (IRD) of the Ministry of Finance.
According to the notification, Belal Hossain has been transferred to the Taxes Appellate Tribunal as its president.
Last Tuesday, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed a case against him, accusing him of acquiring approximately Tk 50 million in illicit wealth and concealing asset information.
The case was filed by ACC Deputy Director Md Saiduzzaman at the Commission’s Integrated District Office, Dhaka-1.
According to the First Information Report (FIR), Belal Hossain concealed information about assets worth Tk 46,019,713 in his submitted wealth statement.
Despite acquiring these assets through “corrupt means” while serving as a government official, he failed to disclose them and provided “false and misleading information,” the FIR stated.
Belal Hossain allegedly acquired immovable and movable assets worth Tk 49,751,396 beyond his known sources of income.
