Police have arrested two individuals following a clandestine meeting of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) in Chattogram’s Fatikchhari Upazila, where over a hundred activists were in attendance.
A case has been filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act, and law enforcement agencies are currently working to identify the organisers and other participants of the gathering.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Md Zaman Babu, 23, and Saiful Islam Sajib, 25. They were produced before a court on Friday following their arrest.
According to police and local sources, the meeting was held on Thursday evening in the rest house of a religious institution in the Rosangiri area. The event was organised by the Fatikchhari Upazila unit of the banned Chhatra League.
Photographs of the assembly circulated on social media, showing local leaders addressing the crowd in front of a banner that read, “Discussion and exchange meeting with grassroots and prison-oppressed leaders of Upazila Chhatra League.”
Locals reported a sudden influx of motorcycles and people in the area on Thursday evening, and the matter became public once the images began to spread online.
Police confirmed that a raid was conducted at the venue, but most participants managed to flee before the team arrived. The two suspects were apprehended during subsequent operations.
Fatikchhari Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Rabiul Alam Khan said that the raid was initiated after receiving primary evidence of activities being conducted by the banned organisation.
“We are currently analysing the photos and videos circulating on social media to identify those involved. No one will be spared,” the OC said. He added that the police are investigating who orchestrated the meeting and the identities of all those who attended.
