Bayern Munich stormed into Bergamo and dismantled Atalanta 6-1 in the Champions League last-16 first leg on Tuesday night. Vincent Kompany’s side controlled possession, created chance after chance and carved the Italian club apart from the first whistle at the Gewiss Stadium.
Bayern struck early and never eased off. Josip Stanišić opened the scoring in the 12th minute after Serge Gnabry slipped the ball into space, allowing the Croatian defender to hammer home from inside the box.
The Bavarians kept pressing and doubled the lead minutes later. Michael Olise whipped a sharp low strike across goal, catching the Atalanta defence flat-footed and tightening Bayern’s grip on the match.
Olise then turned provider. The French winger slipped a perfectly weighted pass into Gnabry’s run and the German winger lofted the ball over the advancing goalkeeper for Bayern’s third inside 25 ruthless minutes.
Atalanta struggled to breathe. The Italian side held less than 30 percent possession and managed only two shots on target all night while Bayern peppered the goal with wave after wave of attacks.
Kompany’s team resumed the assault after the break. Nicolas Jackson latched onto a quick move and drilled a low finish past the keeper in the 52nd minute to make it four.
Olise then delivered the night’s standout moment. Alphonso Davies slipped him the ball and the winger sliced through defenders with quick feet before slotting in his second goal with icy composure.
Substitute Jamal Musiala added the sixth soon after, calmly tapping in from Jackson’s pass to underline Bayern’s dominance. Even Dayot Upamecano nearly joined the party, his towering header crashing against the post.
Mario Pašalić grabbed a stoppage-time consolation for Atalanta, but the damage had long been done.
Bayern now carry a five-goal cushion into the return leg in Munich. Unless Atalanta conjure a miracle, Kompany’s side can already start planning the quarter-finals.
