Rail communication between the northern route and other parts of the country remained suspended after the engine of the Rajshahi-bound Barendra Express detached from its carriages in Dinajpur’s Dangapara area.
The incident occurred around 7:40am on Saturday, soon after the train, which had departed from Panchagarh’s Chilahati, left Birampur Railway Station, said Zulfiqar Ali, officer-in-charge of Parbatipur Railway Police Station.
He confirmed that the engine reached Hili Railway Station without the coaches, which later got stuck in the Satkuri area.
Railway police and locals reported that a mechanical fault caused the engine to become separated from the bogies. While the engine moved forward, the coaches remained stationed on the tracks, they said.
