Journalists covering the banking sector across print, electronic and online media in Dhaka have launched a professional body named the Association of Banking Reporters (ABR), forming a convening committee to steer its activities.
The decision was taken unanimously at a meeting held on Monday at the Jahangir Alam Conference Room of Bangladesh Bank headquarters in Motijheel.
The meeting was held to discuss current issues in the banking sector. Participating journalists stressed the need for a unified platform to promote professional excellence among banking reporters, organise training and seminars, improve journalistic standards and work for members’ welfare.
Following the discussion, members approved the formation of a convening committee and finalised the name “Association of Banking Reporters (ABR)” from several proposals through majority consensus.
Channel i’s Rizvi Newaz has been named convener, while Sheikh Abu Taleb of bdnews24.com will serve as member secretary.
Other members include Rahim Sheikh of Rupali Bangladesh, Shamsul Huda of The Daily Observer, MM Masud of Manabzamin, Masum Mia of Channel 24, Seleya Sultana of Somoy TV, Moriom Sejuti of Citizen Journal, Muhammad Anisuzzaman of NTV, Najmul Islam of Janakantha and Mina Ferdious of Channel One.
The information was disclosed in a press release issued by the committee’s member secretary Sheikh Abu Taleb.
Abu Taleb told TIMES that the organisation aims to uphold ethical standards in journalism related to the banking and non-banking sectors through collective efforts.
“We believe in openness, transparency and accountability of information, ensuring real-time data flow, and freedom of journalism in all aspects,” he said.
