Bangladeshi photographer Amir Hamja has been honoured internationally, with his poignant image featured in TIME’s prestigious 100 Photos of the Year. The photograph captures the funeral prayers of Didarul Islam, resonating with audiences worldwide for its emotional intensity and narrative power.
A statement issued by The Ministry of Cultural Affairs described the achievement as “a proud moment for Bangladesh,” highlighting Hamja’s ability to convey stories of human experience with dignity and global resonance.
Hamja’s recognition continues a legacy of Bangladeshi photographers making their mark on the international stage. The Ministry noted that the works of KM Asad, Taslima Akhter and Munir Uz Zaman have previously been included in TIME’s annual collection, underscoring Bangladesh’s growing influence in visual storytelling.
The announcement also coincides with a broader push to institutionalise photography in Bangladesh. The Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy will soon launch a dedicated Photography department, signalling a commitment to nurturing the country’s creative talent and providing a platform for emerging artists to gain both national and international visibility.
