Bangladesh’s women’s football team returned to the National Stadium in Dhaka for the first time in 12 years on Wednesday, but the occasion ended in frustration as they slipped to a 1–0 defeat to Malaysia in the opening match of the Infinix Tri-Nation Series.
The only goal came in the 29th minute, stemming from a costly defensive misjudgement. With Bangladesh attempting to hold an aggressive high line, makeshift centre-back Kohati Kisku hesitated for a split second, allowing Nur Anisyah Binti to burst through. The Malaysian forward made no mistake, racing clear before finishing calmly past Rupna Chakma.
The setback extended Bangladesh’s poor run of form, following two heavy away defeats to Thailand last month. With the AFC Women’s Asian Cup qualifiers looming next year, the result offers ample food for thought for head coach Peter Butler and his staff.
Tactical reshuffle falls short
Butler opted for a 4-5-1 setup, tasking young striker Sultana Khatun with leading the line on her own. Ritu Porna Chakma and Shamsunnahar Jr provided width from the flanks, while Monika Chakma, Maria Manda and Munki Akter anchored the midfield. Notably absent was winger Sapna Rani, who played no part in the starting XI.
At the back, Afeida Khandaker partnered Kohati at centre-half, with Sheiuli Azim and Shamsunnahar Sr operating as full-backs. Rupna, as expected, kept her place in goal.
The structure allowed Bangladesh to dominate possession for long phases, particularly in the first half, but the final pass repeatedly let them down. Malaysia, ranked 12 places higher in the FIFA rankings, sat deep, absorbed pressure and broke rhythm with disciplined defending.
Most of Bangladesh’s attacking progress came via the wings. Ritu Porna was lively down the left, yet clear chances remained scarce.
Big miss proves costly
The hosts’ best opportunity came in the 68th minute after a bright combination down the left. Second-half substitute Sagorika exchanged passes neatly with Ritu Porna, who then delivered a superb curling cross to the far post. Sagorika rose unmarked but could only direct her header straight at the Malaysian goalkeeper. It was a moment that summed up Bangladesh’s frustrating evening in front of goal.
Malaysia, meanwhile, remained dangerous on the counter and almost doubled their lead in stoppage time. Rupna Chakma had to stay alert, producing a sharp point-blank save to keep the deficit to one.
With Malaysia set to face Azerbaijan on Saturday, Bangladesh must regroup quickly before meeting Azerbaijan in the tournament’s final fixture on Tuesday.
Despite the defeat, Butler will be encouraged by the spells of controlled possession and improved structure. But with the Asian Cup qualifiers on the horizon, the challenge now is to turn territorial dominance into goals.
Bangladesh XI: Rupna Chakma; Kohati Kisku, Monika Chakma, Maria Manda, Afaida Khandkar; Munki Akter, Shiuli Azim, Rituporna Chakma; Sultana Akter, Shamsunnahar Junior, Shamsunnahar Senior.
