Sheikh Parvez Jibon claimed five wickets as Bangladesh U-23 opened their three-match one-day series against Malaysia with a commanding 153-run victory at Bashundhara Sports Complex on Wednesday.
After winning the toss, Bangladesh elected to bat and posted 290 for nine.
The Malaysian chase never gained momentum as Bangladesh’s bowling attack kept taking wickets at regular intervals. The spinners did most of the damage, with Parvez Jibon producing the standout figures of five for 16.
Left-arm pacer Maruf Mridha also contributed with two important wickets, removing Sharvin Muniandy and Prashant Madhukar. Malaysia struggled to build any substantial partnership and were eventually bowled out for 137.
Ahmad Zybaidi Zulkifle was Malaysia’s leading scorer with 42, but there was little support around him as Bangladesh maintained control throughout the second innings.
Before that Bangladesh struggled at the starting of their batting inning. They lost both openers inside the first seven runs. Rizan Hossain then departed without scoring, leaving Bangladesh in serious trouble at 11 for three.
Mohammad Abdullah and Ahrar Amin responded with a crucial 102-run partnership for the sixth wicket. Ahrar made 61 before his dismissal, while Abdullah continued to anchor the innings and looked set for a century. He eventually fell for 94, but his innings helped Bangladesh recover and set Malaysia a challenging target. That Malaysia could not overcome.
The result gives Bangladesh U-23 an early 1-0 lead in the three-match series. The second match will be played on August 14, with Bangladesh looking to seal the series with another victory.
