Bangladesh extended their lead from 151 to 219 runs and went into lunch on the third day in a strong position. Mehidy Hasan Miraz kept Bangladesh on course with a determined half-century.
Bangladesh resumed the third day on 351 for six, with their batters looking to spend as much time at the crease as possible. However, the partnership between Miraz and Hasan Mahmud, which had helped Bangladesh avoid a collapse on the second day, did not last long.
Hasan was dismissed for 14 from 92 balls in the 114th over. Josh Hazlewood trapped him lbw with a delivery that kept slightly low, ending a 46-run partnership from 170 balls. The stand had helped Bangladesh maintain control after their late collapse on the second day.
Taijul Islam then joined Miraz at the crease and the pair added 18 runs from 25 balls. Taijul contributed 17 from 23 balls, including a six, before Hazlewood struck again. Taijul was caught in the slip cordon.
Miraz then continued his resistance alongside Taskin Ahmed. He took responsibility for the innings as Bangladesh looked to build a substantial lead. The pair remained together through to lunch, having added 45 runs from 92 balls.
By then, Bangladesh had moved beyond 400. Miraz’s patient batting brought him his half-century, while Bangladesh reached 417 for eight at lunch, taking their lead to 219.
Australia also missed an opportunity to have the grip. In the 129th over, Taskin played a lofted shot that went towards deep backward square leg, where Steve Smith was unable to complete a relatively straightforward catch. The ball slipped through his hands and the Miraz-Taskin partnership survived.
Australia then had another chance, but Travis Head could not hold a more difficult catch.
Miraz went into lunch unbeaten on 65 from 152 balls, with Taskin unbeaten on 12 from 22.
