Bangladesh has urged the creation of a more flexible, technology‑driven and forward‑looking United Nations Police, capable of tackling increasingly global security threats.
Addressing the 5th United Nations Chiefs of Police Summit 2026 at UN Headquarters in New York on Wednesday, Home Affairs Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said, “Tomorrow’s security challenges cannot be addressed with yesterday’s capabilities.”
He underlined the importance of investing in highly trained officers, specialised skills and innovative strategies as transnational criminal networks grow more sophisticated, according to a press release from Bangladesh’s Permanent Mission to the UN on Thursday.
The minister highlighted Bangladesh’s role in UN peacekeeping and noted that the country has introduced major reforms to strengthen its police force against evolving threats.
He proposed setting up a UN Police Knowledge and Innovation Network to enable systematic sharing of expertise and best practices among member states.
Pointing to climate change as a rising security concern, he also suggested holding an annual Conference on Environment and Policing to boost cooperation, knowledge exchange and preparedness for climate‑related risks.
