Bangladesh has inaugurated its honorary consulate in Cape Town, South Africa, aiming to enhance services for expatriates and expand bilateral trade and business ties in the region.
Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam and Bangladesh High Commissioner to South Africa Shah Ahmed Shafi attended the soft opening ceremony on Friday, according to a press release.
The Western Cape Province hosts South Africa’s second largest Bangladeshi diaspora, making the consulate a key move to broaden consular outreach and support services for nationals living in the area.
The Bangladesh government appointed prominent businessman Johan Max le Roux as honorary consul for the Western Cape in October 2025, recognising his long-standing business connections with Bangladesh.
Foreign Secretary Siam travelled to South Africa to lead the Bangladesh delegation at the 6th Foreign Office Consultations (FOC) between the two countries.
