Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has expressed concern over the rapid decline of agricultural land in the country.
He said farmland is shrinking day by day, which is worrying for the future. He urged everyone to remain alert so that agricultural land is not destroyed in the name of development.
The minister made the remarks on Wednesday morning while visiting the proposed campus site of Thakurgaon University at Jamalpur Sugarcane Farm in Thakurgaon Sadar upazila.
He said efforts should be made to protect farmland as much as possible. He also said multi-storey buildings would be constructed for the campus.
Mirza Fakhrul said agricultural land in the country is decreasing very fast, which would not be good for the nation.
He further said several locations are being inspected for the university. He noted that around 100 acres of land at Jamalpur Sugarcane Farm appears suitable for the project.
“We are inspecting several places. That is why we came to see the sugarcane farm. It has around 100 acres of land. Since it is a government-to-government matter, acquiring the land will be easier,” he added.
