Bangladesh’s victory over Sri Lanka in the Super Four has sparked talk of a place in the Asia Cup final. But former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali refuses to buy into the hype. For him, the final is already set: India versus Pakistan.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Basit insisted Pakistan were always favourites against Sri Lanka and suggested Bangladesh had little chance of overcoming either of the subcontinental giants.
“Pakistan have won today and, God willing, will reach the final. Tomorrow Bangladesh face India. Should Bangladesh lose, then our match with them effectively becomes a semi-final,” he remarked.
While many observers see Bangladesh’s momentum as a sign of progress, Basit finds the idea of them or Sri Lanka reaching the final laughable.
He quipped:
“People were saying Pakistan must improve their run rate. But really, do you think Bangladesh will beat India? India are a top-class side. To imagine India losing to Bangladesh and then to Sri Lanka as well — that’s just absurd. I’m shocked that even some former players are suggesting it. Of course, upsets happen. But not every day is Sunday.”
He went on:
“Two shocks in a row? No chance. In Bangladesh versus India, the favourites are India. In India versus Sri Lanka, the favourites are India. Pakistan were favourites against Sri Lanka, and we proved it.”
Basit even argued that television networks are rooting for a Pakistan final.
“Who will be happiest if Pakistan go through? The broadcasters! It may be called the Asia Cup, but behind the curtain, it’s the networks pulling the strings. They convinced India to play in the first place. I’ve said this from the very start, but no one listens. The Pakistan–Bangladesh clash will be the semi-final. After that, God willing, I’ll make another video for you.”
