Bangladesh Bar Council has postponed its upcoming elections, originally scheduled for 19 May 2026, and in a separate resolution, suspended the professional licence of lawyer Masdar Hossain following allegations of financial misconduct.
The decisions were reached during an emergency meeting held on Wednesday, at the Bar Council Bhaban.
According to an official press release, the election for seven general seats and seven regional seats has been deferred due to a severe nationwide fuel crisis. The council noted that the crisis was significantly disrupting the election campaigns of candidates across the country.
This decision also followed formal requests for postponement from several organisations, including the Supreme Court Bar Association, the Dhaka Bar Association, and the Chittagong District Bar Association.
In a separate resolution, the Council suspended the certificate of lawyer Masdar Hossain. The action stems from a report published in national daily on 12 April 2026, which alleged that Hossain had embezzled Tk1.25 crore from a client.
The press release stated that the lawyer had reportedly admitted to the allegations.
Based on preliminary evidence and considerations of professional ethics, the council has issued a show-cause notice to Hossain, requiring him to explain within 15 days why his licence should not be permanently cancelled.
His professional licence will remain suspended until further notice.
