Dhaka has recorded 198 murders in the past ten months, averaging 20 killings per month, according to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
Briefing journalists on Tuesday morning, DMP Deputy Commissioner (Media) Muhammad Talebur Rahman said 18 murders were reported in October alone. He noted that in most cases police were able to apprehend suspects swiftly.
Talebur Rahman identified family disputes, longstanding enmity, political rivalry, and power struggles as the primary causes behind the killings in the capital.
Addressing the recent murder of a Jubo Dal leader in Pallabi, he said police are actively pursuing the investigation. Describing the incident as “sensational,” he confirmed that one suspect, Jony, has been arrested in connection with the case.
The investigation remains in its early stages, and the murder weapon has yet to be recovered, he added. “We are working to arrest all individuals involved.
Law enforcement agencies remain on alert to prevent any acts of sabotage in the capital, with adequate personnel deployed,” the DMP official said.
