An auto-rickshaw driver was allegedly killed in Gazipur’s Kapasia upazila by robbers who took away his vehicle, while his elderly mother died after hearing the news of her son’s death.
The incident took place after Thursday evening beside Mirzangar Girls’ High School in Shimultali area of Mirzangar under Sonmania union of Kapasia. The deceased, Ata Mia, 60, was a resident of Batna village in Ghagtia Chala area of the upazila.
Police and local residents said members of Aral Bazar Police Investigation Centre went to the spot after receiving a call through the national emergency service number 999 on Thursday evening.
They found the body of an elderly man lying in an isolated area beside Shimultali Road near the school. Police later recovered the body, which bore injury marks on the head caused by a sharp weapon.
Inspector Shafiqul Islam, in-charge of Aral Bazar Police Investigation Centre, confirmed the matter.
Ata Mia’s relative Mostafa Akan said Ata earned his livelihood by driving an auto-rickshaw. He suspected that robbers had hired Ata on the pretext of a passenger trip, taken him to a secluded area, killed him and fled with the vehicle.
Meanwhile, Ata’s 75-year-old mother Johura died after learning about her son’s death.
Kapasia Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Nasir Ahmed told the TIMES that the incident appeared to be a murder based on initial findings.
He said police were preparing to send the body to the morgue of Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital for an autopsy.
The OC added that police were working to uncover the motive behind the killing and identify those involved. Legal action in the case was underway.
