Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin has described the attack on Sharif Osman Hadi, spokesperson of the Inqilab Mancha, as an isolated incident.
He made the remark while speaking at a “Youth Voter” event in Dhaka’s Gulshan on Monday.
The CEC said that one or two isolated incidents occur during election times and that there has been no deterioration in the law and order situation in the country.
He said, “These are not new occurrences. During elections, Ahsanullah Master and former finance minister Shah AMS Kibria were also killed. The attack on Hadi is also an isolated incident.”
“There is no concern regarding the February election. The Election Commission will hold the election on time with everyone’s cooperation and participation. The law enforcement agencies are fully prepared. They are ready to handle any situation until the election, and the election will take place properly and on schedule,” he added.
He also said, “Young people are a symbol of courage and creativity. The country cannot be built without you. The upcoming election will be free, fair, and transparent. This year’s election will be held with youth participation.”
The CEC highlighted that the youth demonstrated this in ’69, ’70, ’71, ’90, and ’24. He said it is not possible to build the country without the creativity, knowledge-based ideas, and strength of the youth.
He also said, “This election will be a historic one. Why historic? We have brought expatriates under the voting process through postal ballots, which has not happened in the past 54 years.
“Again, those involved in election work could not vote previously; this time they will be able to vote via postal ballot. Prisoners, as well as government officers and employees, will also be able to vote this time.”
He added, “Arrangements for a referendum have to be made. I hope the youth remain involved with this, then we will progress further. The future of Bangladesh is bright.”
