The schedule for the 13th national election and the referendum will be announced at 6pm on Thursday.
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin will declare the schedule in an address to the nation. Election Commission (EC) Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed has confirmed this.
Ahead of the announcement, the CEC and four commissioners met President Mohammed Shahabuddin at Bangabhaban on Wednesday afternoon. Later, around 4pm, the CEC’s speech was recorded.
Amid mass protests, the Awami League government fell on August 5 last year. Subsequently, on August 8, an interim government led by Muhammad Yunus was sworn in. Sixteen months later, the EC is now set to announce the national election schedule.
Following the formation of the new government, a new Election Commission was established on November 21 last year. The upcoming election will be the first to be held under this commission.
In addition, both the parliamentary election and a referendum on implementing the July Charter will take place on the same day.
Altogether, the nation holds both hope and concern regarding the election.
