Journalist Anis Alamgir is set to be produced before a court on Monday afternoon in connection with a case alleging conspiracy to destabilise the state and incitement of a banned organisation.
Additional Commissioner of the Detective Branch (DB) Police, Shafiqul Islam, confirmed the development, saying a case has been filed with the Uttara West Police Station and he was shown arrested in this case.
Earlier in the morning, Kazi Mohammad Rafique Ahmed, officer‑in‑charge of Uttara West Police Station, said that a complaint was filed under the Anti‑Terrorism Act against four persons, including Anis Alamgir, actor Meher Afroz Shaon, model Maria Kispotta and Imtu Ratish Imtiaz.
Arian Ahmed, a central organiser of the July Revolutionary Alliance, lodged the complaint after 2am on Monday at Uttara West Police Station in Dhaka.
Anis Alamgir was taken to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s DB office on Sunday evening for questioning. Deputy Commissioner (media and public relations) of DMP Muhammad Talebur Rahman confirmed that he was brought to the DB office around 8:15pm.
Speaking to journalists over the phone around 8:30pm, Anis Alamgir said he had been picked up from a gym in Dhanmondi area. According to him, DB officials informed him that their chief wished to speak with him.
He added that he was taken to the DB office, where he had been waiting and had not yet met the DB chief at that time.
On Monday morning around 9:15am, a senior DB official told the media that Anis Alamgir was still at the DB office and that a decision regarding his case would be taken shortly.
DMP Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Talebur Rahman also confirmed that Anis Alamgir remained in DB custody ahead of his court appearance.
