Atletico Madrid publicly mocked city rivals Real Madrid after reports emerged that Los Blancos had submitted a €150 million offer for Julian Alvarez.
The transfer story quickly turned into a public exchange between the two clubs. Real Madrid reportedly disclosed their interest in the Argentina forward, while Atletico responded through social media and an official statement.
Atletico first reacted with a series of laughing emojis before releasing a stronger message aimed directly at their neighbours.
“Official statement with our clarifications regarding our neighbours’ official statement.
“Real Madrid: 1. You cut the part of the Pope’s video where he said he was also an Atlético fan.
“2. You may have confused politeness with gratitude, but just so there’s no doubt: we don’t thank you for anything.
“3. We haven’t considered or evaluated any offers for Julián.
“4. How could we not get along, when you make us laugh even more than Barcelona does?”
The statement left little doubt about Atletico’s position. The club insisted it had not considered any proposal for Alvarez and showed no interest in opening negotiations.
Atletico then added another message that escalated the rivalry further.
“P.S. Taking advantage of the good relationship with your new president, let’s see if you’ll stop ‘stealing’ players from our Academy. Thank you very much, Real Madrid!”
Alvarez joined Atletico as one of the club’s marquee signings and remains a central figure in Diego Simeone’s plans. Any move involving the Argentina international would rank among the biggest transfers in Spanish football history.
The public nature of the exchange drew attention across Spain. Clubs rarely discuss transfer proposals in such detail, particularly when the player in question belongs to a direct rival.
For now, Atletico’s position appears clear. The club has rejected the idea of selling Alvarez and used the opportunity to take a swipe at Real Madrid in the process.
