A four-member Palestinian archery team has arrived in Dhaka to compete in the Teer 24th Asian Archery Championships, carrying with them the pride and pain of a nation enduring conflict. While their homeland faces devastation, these athletes have chosen to represent their country on the international stage, their participation made possible by the logistical and financial support of the Bangladesh Archery Federation.
The team, comprising three recurve and one compound archer, embodies a profound act of resilience. For them, the championship is more than a sporting event; it is a platform to show the world that Palestine perseveres. Dr. Maan Barakat, President of the Palestinian Shooting and Archery Federation, articulated the heavy significance of their presence.
“Every day we see killing, bombing, and destruction in Palestine,” Dr. Barakat stated. “Despite everything, we are here to represent our people. It is our commitment and our hope to continue until the end.” He expressed deep gratitude to the hosts, noting, “Without the support of the Bangladesh Archery Federation, we would not be here today. They organised everything for us.”
The team’s preparation has been severely hampered by the conditions at home. Dr. Barakat explained that training in Palestine is “very difficult” and the situation “complicated.” Yet, their ambitions remain undimmed. He revealed that the team’s long-term dream is to reach the Olympics and, one day, win a gold medal.
Their potential for success is not merely aspirational. Dr. Barakat highlighted a significant achievement, noting, “In 2024, at the West Asian Archery Championship in Iraq, our compound team won a bronze medal.” This proves the team is capable of progressing despite immense adversity.
As their arrows fly in Dhaka, each shot serves as a silent testament to their nation’s unbreakable spirit. “To represent Palestine is a big honour for all of us,” Dr. Barakat concluded. “We will keep trying, and Inshallah, we will bring back a medal this time for our people, for our homeland, and for peace.”
