Arguments on behalf of the prosecution have been presented in the crimes against humanity case filed regarding the Abu Sayeed murder incident.
On Thursday, at the International Crimes Tribunal-2, Prosecutor Mizanul Islam presented the arguments. Defense lawyer Salahuddin Regan was present at the hearing. The hearing has been adjourned while the presentation of arguments remains incomplete. The next hearing will be held on 25 January.
After the arguments are concluded, the case will move towards a verdict. Prior to this, arguments on behalf of the prosecution began on 20 January.
In this case, a total of 30 individuals, including former Vice Chancellor of Rangpur Begum Rokeya University Hasibur Rashid, have been accused. Among them, six, including former Proctor Shariful Islam, are currently arrested and in jail. The remaining 24 are still at large.
A total of 25 witnesses, including the investigation officer, have testified on behalf of the prosecution. The accused in jail are ASI Amir Hossain, former Proctor Shariful Islam, Constable Sujan Chandra Roy, Chhatra League leader Imran Chowdhury, Rafiul Hasan Russell, and Anwar Parvez. There are no witnesses for the defense.
Court sources say that state-appointed lawyers are participating in the case proceedings on behalf of the fugitive accused. The trial proceedings of this case began on 6 August last year, when the tribunal framed charges against the 30 accused.
Before that, the formal charges were taken into cognizance on 30 June, and on 27 August, the prosecution presented its opening statement.
