Argentina showed the strength of their squad with a comfortable 3-1 win over Jordan on Sunday, giving coach Lionel Scaloni another reason to feel confident before the FIFA World Cup knockout stage.
The defending champions made nine changes to the starting line-up but still finished top of Group J with a perfect nine points. Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez and striker Lautaro Martinez were the only players to keep their places in the team.
Already through to the round of 32, Argentina used the match to rest key players and give game time to others. The team will face Cape Verde in Miami on Friday.
Scaloni said it was important to reward players who had not featured much in the tournament.
“What we were looking for was the boys who had not played to have minutes, because the truth is they deserve it,” Scaloni said after the match.
“I’m happy because we gave minutes to everyone and that’s very important for us.”
Lionel Messi started on the bench but came on after the hour mark. He made an instant impact by scoring a stunning free kick that sealed the win.
The goal also gave Messi another World Cup record. He became the first player to score in seven straight World Cup matches.
Argentina have now used every available outfield player in their squad during the group stage. The rotation has kept the team fresh while maintaining strong performances.
With nine points from three matches, a fully involved squad and Messi in top form, Argentina head into the knockout stage looking like one of the strongest teams left in the tournament.
