Dhallywood actress Barsha has triggered debate on social media after expressing support for Egypt ahead of its FIFA World Cup Round of 16 clash against Argentina on Tuesday (7 July).

Barsha has long identified herself as a devoted supporter of Argentina and Lionel Messi.

However, in a post on her verified Facebook page on Tuesday, she said she would not feel upset even if Argentina lost because she wanted Muslims to win. She wrote: “Even if my favourite team Argentina lose today, I will not feel sad. From the bottom of my heart, I want Muslims to win in this world. Ameen.”

Her remarks quickly drew mixed reactions online. Many users said she had every right to express her personal opinion and support Egypt as a Muslim-majority nation.

Others questioned why she chose to back Egypt against the team she has supported for years. Some also argued that people should not mix religion with sport.

Barsha has not responded to the reactions or offered any further explanation about her post.

Argentina and Egypt will meet in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 at 10pm Bangladesh time on Tuesday.

The match has already generated widespread discussion among supporters of both teams and across social media.
