The humanitarian support centre by Bangladesh Ansar and VDP, established to assist those affected by the Korail fire, has concluded its nine-day service campaign.
The programme ended in a ceremony on Saturday at the T&T playground in Gulshan.
After distributing emergency food, winter clothing and daily cooked meals throughout the period, the final day of the initiative saw 1,200 children affected by the fire receiving packets of powdered milk.
Bangladesh Ansar and VDP Additional Director General Brigadier General Fida Mahmud attended the event as the chief guest.
Speaking at the emergency child food distribution, the additional director general said the primary objective was to deliver humanitarian support to help victims recover from the psychological and practical losses caused by a disaster such as fire.
He said the force remained sincere in its efforts to ease the suffering of those affected and reaffirmed its commitment to stand beside vulnerable communities in any future humanitarian crisis.
The devastating Korail slum fire on 25 November left thousands homeless and in severe hardship.
In the face of acute shortages of shelter, children’s food, winter clothing and cooked meals, Bangladesh Ansar and the Village Defence Party launched the humanitarian support centre on 28 November under the directive of Director General Major General Abdul Motaleb Sazzad Mahmud, guided by the principle that “human beings are for one another.”
As temperatures dropped, the force distributed 500 blankets and additional winter clothing to 400 people.
For nine consecutive days, cooked meals were served to 2,000 affected individuals each day, both at noon and at night, ensuring basic food security for those who had lost everything in the fire.
Bangladesh Ansar and VDP’s coordinated, dedicated and compassionate intervention became a vital source of support for the crisis-stricken residents of Korail, helping restore morale, confidence and essential stability as they began rebuilding their lives.
The force is also working to install an alternative water supply point to replace the damaged safe water system. Once completed, it will ensure sustainable water storage and supply for the general residents of the slum.
In his concluding remarks, the additional director general extended heartfelt thanks to Dhaka Metropolitan Ansar Director Md Asaduzzaman Gani, officials of Dhaka Zone, members of Dhaka Metropolitan Ansar, the Town Defence Party and Ansar Battalion members for their dedicated service in carrying out such humanitarian activities.
