Parliament witnessed a light-hearted moment on Saturday when a slip of the tongue by Bangladesh Jatiya Party (BJP) lawmaker Andaleeve Rahman prompted laughter across the House during the budget debate.
While speaking on the proposed national budget, Andaleeve said he wanted to raise what he described as a “very important” issue concerning the development of his constituency, Bhola.
“Honourable Speaker, let me say something about my constituency. It is very important… I want to speak about Bhola. Honourable Speaker, if Hafiz Saheb were here, he could relate to it,” he said.
Deputy Speaker Kayser Kamal, who was presiding over the sitting, interrupted with a smile, asking, “Sorry! Who is Hafiz Saheb?”
Realising his mistake, Andaleeve immediately corrected himself.
“Sorry, sorry… Mr Speaker. Thank you. Sorry, so sorry,” he said, drawing laughter from fellow lawmakers.
Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, a BNP lawmaker elected from the Bhola-3 constituency, was not in the chair at the time.
The brief exchange provided a rare moment of humour during the otherwise serious budget discussion before the House resumed its scheduled proceedings.
