Barcelona have only a few days left to test Atletico Madrid’s resolve over Julian Alvarez, with the Argentine striker left out of their La Liga opener against Malaga.
Diego Simeone’s decision to leave Alvarez out of the squad has given Barcelona a final opportunity to explore a deal, with Spanish reports suggesting the Catalan club could make one last approach within the next two or three days.
However, Simeone insists the absence should not be interpreted as a sign that Atletico are ready to sell their leading forward.
“Miguel Angel is the club’s owner. Nothing is more definitive than the club’s owner, it’s crystal clear,” Simeone told reporters.
Atletico chief executive Miguel Angel Gil Marin has repeatedly stated that the club do not intend to sell Alvarez. He has even indicated that Atletico would reject an offer of €200 million for the striker, who joined from Manchester City for €75m in 2024.
Barcelona have yet to abandon their interest. Mundo Deportivo reports that the club will make a final effort before considering alternative attacking options.
Alvarez remains Barcelona’s preferred target as they look to strengthen their forward line, with the club aiming to build a squad capable of competing for the Champions League.
The striker’s own comments have also kept speculation alive. Alvarez has previously spoken about his ambition to play for Barcelona and indicated that he had discussed his future with Atletico.
“I can’t hide it, the best thing is to leave, I want to achieve my dream,” he said.
Atletico, meanwhile, remain keen to keep him. Alvarez has scored 49 goals in 106 appearances for the Madrid club, and Simeone hopes he will be available for Sunday’s meeting with Villarreal.
“I hope that over the next four days, he’ll be closer to where we want him to be,” Simeone said.
He added that Alvarez still needs more training before reaching his best level.
“He needs more practice. He’s the best player we have and we’re going to try to build a team around him,” Simeone said.
Barcelona now face a short deadline to decide whether to make their final move.
