Abdur Razzaque, a presidium member of the banned Awami League and former agriculture minister, alongside Kazi Habibul Awal, the former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), has filed bail petitions with the High Court.
The matter has appeared on the cause list for hearing before the High Court bench comprising Justice Md Atoar Rahman and Justice Biswajit Debnath.
Razzaque is seeking bail in seven separate cases, including four filed in Dhaka and three in Tangail. These petitions follow the prior rejection of his bail applications by subordinate courts. He was arrested by the Detective Branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police on the night of 14 October 2024, in the New Eskaton area of the capital, and has remained in prison in connection with various cases since then.
Meanwhile, former CEC Kazi Habibul Awal has sought bail in a single case after the Dhaka Metropolitan Court previously turned down his application. He was arrested by the DB from the Moghbazar area on 25 June last year. Following his arrest, the court granted a three-day remand on 26 June, and he has been detained in jail since that period.
The case against Awal was initiated on 22 June at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station by BNP Executive Committee member Salah Uddin Khan. The litigation names the commissions led by Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad, KM Nurul Huda, and Kazi Habibul Awal, who oversaw the 10th, 11th, and 12th parliamentary elections.
They are accused of depriving the public of their voting rights through “farcical elections,” which allegedly included the practice of casting votes at night.
