Police arrested Union Parishad Chairman and Awami League leader Mokbul Hossain Mukul in connection with the murder of a student shot during the July mass uprising in Debidwar, Cumilla.
Debidwar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Moniruzzaman confirmed the matter on Monday.
He said Mukul, the chairman of Gunaighar North Union Parishad and president of the Union Awami League, was detained based on a tip-off. He was later formally shown arrested in the student murder case and sent to prison.
According to case details, Aminul Islam Sabbir, a ninth-grade student, sustained a gunshot wound to the head on 5 August 2024, during the mass uprising. After undergoing treatment for 21 days at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, he passed away on 26 August.
Following the death, Sabbir’s maternal uncle, Nazmul Hasan, filed a murder case at Debidwar Police Station naming 99 individuals, including a former member of Parliament. Mukul was one of the primary accused in the First Information Report (FIR).
