Akbar Ali is positioning himself for a potential breakthrough Bangladesh Premier League season, backing his recent domestic form as he pushes for a spot in Rajshahi Warriors’ top order as a specialist batter.
Following Rajshahi’s training session at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Sunday, the wicketkeeper-batter said he remains confident yet respectful of team decisions.
“Every player comes with the expectation of playing, and I am no different. Inshallah, I will get the opportunity as a batter,” Akbar said. “At the same time, selection is entirely up to the management. I am ready whenever the team needs me, in whatever role that may be.”
Rajshahi head coach Hannan Sarkar confirmed that Mushfiqur Rahim will handle wicketkeeping responsibilities in the upcoming BPL, freeing Akbar to focus purely on his batting. Mushfiqur, 38, was seen working extensively behind the stumps during practice, reinforcing the team’s likely tactical setup.
Akbar’s case is strengthened by a productive run in domestic cricket. He captained Rangpur Division to titles in both the National Cricket League T20 and the four-day competition, while also guiding Bangladesh A to the final of the ACC Emerging Asia Cup earlier this year.
His individual numbers have been equally compelling. Akbar finished fourth on the NCL T20 run charts, scoring 203 runs at a strike rate of 149, a return that reflects his growing confidence and adaptability in the shortest format.
Despite his form, Akbar chose caution when asked about role clarity within the Rajshahi lineup. “It would not be right for me to comment on that,” he said. “I do not want to say anything that could make the team environment uncomfortable. Those decisions belong to the management.”
On the presence of Mushfiqur Rahim, Akbar was unequivocal in his praise. “Having Mushfiq bhai in the team is a huge blessing. There is always something to learn from him, and every player benefits from his experience. We will try to absorb as much as possible.
