Civil Aviation and Tourism Adviser Sheikh Bashir Uddin on Sunday stated that every possibility, including sabotage, will be taken in consideration during the investigation into Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport fire.
Speaking to the media after inspecting the fire-damaged cargo village at the airport, he emphasised that all aspects of the incident would be thoroughly investigated.
“We will take everything into account and conduct a comprehensive investigation. Every complaint that has been raised will be treated with utmost importance,” Bashir said during his visit on Sunday afternoon.
He added that the government has waived additional flight charges for the next three days for those affected by the blaze.
On Saturday, a massive fire broke out at the airport’s cargo village, and after nearly seven hours of effort from 37 fire-fighting units, the blaze was brought under control.
Bashir, also the commerce adviser, further mentioned that a cataloging committee had been formed to document the events before and after the fire. The investigation will involve discussions with intelligence agencies and relevant stakeholders to uncover any mystery behind the incident.
Regarding the next steps following the fire, he revealed that an inter-ministerial meeting would be held to analyse the situation and take necessary actions.
Bashir also noted that the airport is a Critical Infrastructure Point (CIP) and that the airport’s own firefighting team reached the scene within 30 seconds of the fire’s onset. However, all complaints will be considered, and the matter will be analysed further.
He also informed that due to the fire, 21 flights were either diverted or canceled. To alleviate the passengers’ distress, all charges and expenses for non-scheduled flights over the next three days have been waived.
Bashir assured that necessary arrangements, including meals, hotel accommodation, and other services have been provided to the affected travellers.
