Mohiuddin Chishtia, joint general secretary of Ghorashal municipal BNP and the prime accused in a case involving the assault of a sand trader, held a rally with hundreds of his supporters in Narsingdi’s Palash upazila.
The rally was held around 11:30am on Monday in front of Rowshan General Hospital and the Palli Bidyut office in Ghorashal municipality.
Chishtia said he wanted to make the municipality drug‑free and denied all allegations against him.
According to the case, Md Sakhawat Hossain was picked up on 13 July from in front of Bangladesh Jute Mills, taken to Chishtia’s residence, and assaulted. Chishtia allegedly bit the victim’s ear, causing a severe injury that required hospitalisation and stitches.
Complainant Sajib Bhuiyan, vice president of the district unit of Chhatra Dal and the victim’s business partner, alleged that Chishtia and his associates threatened to kill him unless the case was withdrawn. He also described Chishtia as a “godfather of drugs” in Ghorashal.
Palash Police Station Officer‑in‑charge Shahed Al Mamun said police were trying to arrest the accused but could not nab Chishtia during the rally, as he left after speaking for about five minutes.
The public appearance of a listed suspect has sparked widespread criticism and concern among local residents.
