Police have arrested an individual in connection with a case filed over the viral CCTV footage that shows child abuse at a school in Nayapaltan, Dhaka.
The arrestee, identified as Pabitra Kumar Barua, is the manager of Sharmin Academy. He is also the husband of Sharmin Jahan, the founder and headmistress of the academy.
Paltan Model Police Station confirmed that he was arrested from a residence in Mirpur on Friday.
According to reports, the child fell ill due to trauma after returning home from school and would scream out in their sleep.
The incident took place on 18 January. The victim is a four-year-old student in the pre-play class at the school.
Footage shows the child in school uniform being assaulted by two individuals within the school’s office. The footage depicts the child being slapped, having their mouth forcibly covered, and even having their throat squeezed.
Following the incident, the child’s mother filed a case under the Children Act at Paltan Model Police Station, naming Pabitra Kumar and Sharmin Jahan as the accused.
