The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) member, who lost his leg in a landmine explosion while on duty along the country’s southeastern frontier, has succumbed to his injuries.
The deceased, Nayek Md Akhtar Hossain of the 34 BGB Battalion in Cox’s Bazar, passed away around 12:30pm on Friday while undergoing treatment at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka.
According to BGB sources, Akhtar was temporarily assigned to the Rezu Amtali Border Outpost under the Cox’s Bazar Battalion. On 12 October, he was critically injured when a landmine exploded during a patrol in the Pairabunia border area.
He was first taken to the CMH in Ramu for initial treatment before being airlifted to Dhaka the next day by a BGB helicopter. After days of treatment, he suffered a sudden heart attack on Friday morning.
Despite 45 minutes of continuous CPR under the supervision of Brig Gen Sadat Bin Siraj, an intensive care specialist, doctors could not revive him. He was pronounced dead at 12:30pm.
BGB authorities said the entire force is mourning his death, adding that Akhtar has been accorded the status of ‘martyr.’
Cox’s Bazar Battalion Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel SM Khairul Alam said, “We have lost a brave comrade who sacrificed his life while defending the country’s border. His courage and dedication will inspire us forever.”
He also expressed deep condolences, saying, “Shaheed Nayek Akhtar Hossain has set a shining example of devotion to the nation. We pray for the eternal peace of his soul and extend our heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family.”
BGB said the body of Shaheed Nayek Akhtar Hossain will be laid to eternal rest with full military honours in his home district of Daulatkhan, Bhola.
