A total of 442 categories of pharmaceutical raw materials belonging to 45 companies were destroyed in the recent blaze at the Cargo Village of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA). The estimated financial loss stands at Tk165 crore, excluding VAT, taxes, and other duties.
According to data from the Bangladesh Association of Pharmaceutical Industries (BAPI), Healthcare Pharmaceuticals Limited recorded the largest damage.
The destroyed consignments consisted of sensitive raw ingredients, machinery components, and spare parts required for drug manufacturing. BAPI figures show Healthcare Pharmaceuticals Limited reported losses of nearly Tk25 crore.
Incepta Pharmaceuticals Limited listed losses of Tk15.48 crore, Square Pharmaceuticals PLC Tk12.59 crore, Renata PLC Tk12.65 crore, and ACMI Laboratories Limited Tk12 crore.
BAPI sources say pharmaceutical inputs are extremely vulnerable to heat and humidity. They called for expedited customs processing at the airport to protect essential supplies and keep production stable.
Giska Pharmaceuticals Limited registered losses of Tk 8 crore, while Beximco Pharmaceuticals Limited, Opsonin Pharma Limited, and Unimed Unihealth Pharmaceuticals each faced losses of around Tk 7 crore, Tk 7 crore, and Tk 4 crore respectively.
Delta Pharma, Aristopharma, Popular Pharmaceuticals, Beacon Pharma, Novatek Pharma, Nuvista Pharma, and Eskayef Pharmaceuticals also sustained significant losses.
