Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) authorities have removed all unauthorised shops and structures from Suhrawardy Udyan in a comprehensive eviction operation. The drive began Thursday morning from the park’s entrance near Dhaka University’s TSC area, supervised by DSCC Executive Magistrate Md Aminul Islam, who emphasised the need to restore the national park’s public safety and accessibility.
The demolition follows Tuesday’s tragic stabbing of Dhaka University student Shahriar Alam Shammo near the park’s Open Stage. Shammo, a master’s candidate at the Institute of Education and Research (IER) and publicity secretary of Sir AF Rahman Hall’s student wing, was murdered in the late-night attack, sparking widespread demands for improved campus security.
In response to the security concerns, university officials and park authorities convened an emergency meeting Wednesday with local government adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan. The resulting action plan includes permanent closure of the rear gate near Raju Sculpture, coordinated anti-drug operations involving multiple government agencies, and enhanced surveillance through CCTV installation and dedicated police presence.
Authorities will implement Ramna Park-style disciplined management, impose an 8pm entry curfew, and form a special monitoring committee under the Public Works Ministry. Adviser Asif confirmed these measures and their aim to transform the park from a perceived danger zone into a secure public space, with immediate implementation of all safety protocols.
