Illegal gas connections were cut in Savar through a mobile court operation on Tuesday, averting potential gas theft worth nearly Tk 20 lakh.
According to a press release issued Wednesday, the initiative, spearheaded by Executive Magistrate Simon Sarkar of the Energy and Mineral Resources Division, targeted areas near Tajpur Market, Multi Modern Road close to Sigma Fashion, and Yusuf Market in Ashulia, under the jurisdiction of the Regional Sales Division – Savar of Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Limited (TGTDCL).
During the operation, unauthorised gas connections were cut at 3 locations, around 2.5 kilometres of illegal distribution lines were removed, and 500 meters of gas pipes were dismantled. In addition, approximately 750 residential gas burners or stoves connected via these lines were disconnected.
TGTDCL officials said these illegal connections were siphoning about 107,038 cubic metres of gas every month, equivalent to nearly Tk 19,26,684. The action helped eliminate a load of 15,750 cubic feet per hour, safeguarding a substantial portion of government revenue.
At the Spot-01 near Tajpur Market, the mobile court disconnected 450 double burners installed across 100 houses. In one instance, the court imposed a fine of Tk 50,000.
Authorities emphasised that similar drives will be conducted regularly to curb illegal gas use, protect public resources, and ensure consumers have safe and lawful access to gas.
