The Internal Revenue Division of the Ministry of Finance has formed a five-member investigation committee to assess the overall damage caused by a fire at the cargo village of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA).
The fire broke out at a courier warehouse in the airport’s cargo village around 2:15pm on Saturday. While the exact cause of the fire has not yet been determined, 37 units of fire fighters from different forces responded promptly and brought the flames under control after a nearly seven-hour battle.
Immediately following the incident, the Internal Revenue Division took swift action to evaluate the damage. A five-member investigation committee has been formed for this purpose.
Mohammad Mahbubur Rahman Patwari, joint secretary of the Internal Revenue Division, has been appointed as the committee’s chairman, with Pankaj Barua, deputy secretary of the same division, serving as the member secretary.
Members of the committee include M Raich Uddin Khan, first secretary of the National Board of Revenue (NBR); Md Tariq Hasan and Muhammad Kamrul Hasan, joint commissioners of the Dhaka Customs House.
The committee has been tasked with quickly determining the full extent of the damage caused by the fire at the cargo village and submitting a report to the government.
In the meantime, to prevent any disruption in import and export activities, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) has taken special measures to ensure the continued operations of the Dhaka Customs House.
The cargo village is a vital hub for Bangladesh’s import-export activities, handling goods in various sectors, including ready-made garments, courier services, pharmaceuticals, and agricultural products. Experts fear that such a fire could significantly impact on the export-oriented industries.
