Police have recovered the bloodied body of a woman named Milon Akter, 54, from her residence in Cumilla.
The body was found on Friday evening at a flat on the second floor of Majumdar Villa in the Kathpul area of Uttar Racecourse. Her family home is in Nimsar village of Burichang.
Neighbours said she got divorced about 15 years ago and had since been living in Racecourse with her mother.
Her mother travelled to Noakhali for treatment four to five days ago, leaving her alone in the flat. Of her three daughters, one lives in Europe, another in Noakhali, and the third, Tanzina, lives in a rented house in the Racecourse area.
Tanzina said she could not reach her mother over the phone on Friday evening. She went to the flat and, upon opening the door, found her mother lying in a pool of blood and alerted the police. Police, RAB and PBI teams rushed to the scene.
Officer-in-Charge Mahinul Islam of Kotwali Model Police Station said they suspect she was killed by slitting her throat at least a day earlier. The body had begun to decompose, making it difficult to determine the exact time of death.
He said the body has been sent to Cumilla Medical College Hospital for postmortem examination. An investigation is underway to determine the motive and identify those responsible.
