Teachers and employees of non-government educational institutions, listed under the monthly payment order (MPO) scheme, continue their protest for the fourth consecutive day on Wednesday, announcing an indefinite sit-in at the Central Shaheed Minar.

They have been observing the demonstration and work abstention to press home a three-point demand – a 20% house rent allowance based on the basic salary, an increase in medical allowance to Tk1,500, and raising the festival bonus for staff to 75%.

As the government has yet to issue a circular meeting their demands, the protesters attempted to march toward the Secretariat on Tuesday under the “March to Secretariat” programme. However, they were stopped by police barricades at the High Court intersection.

From there, the leaders issued a new ultimatum, warning that if their demands are not met by 11am Wednesday, they will move their demonstration to Shahbagh. If the circular is still not issued afterward, they vowed to go on a hunger strike unto death.
